Description

Job Title:  Swim Program Aide - Part Time Seasonal position

 

Location: As Assigned by OPS Administration

 

Reports To: Swim Program Instructor

 

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: Hourly/Non-exempt

 

During school year: Weekday evenings and/or weekend daytime hours up to a maximum of 10 hours per week

During summer: Weekday mornings and afternoon daytime hours up to a maximum of 40 hours per week

 

Salary Schedule:   Non-negotiated, Hourly

 

Position Purpose:  Assigned to assist the Swim Program Instructor in the instruction of youth participating in the OPS Swim Program.  Responsible for the safety of all members of the class.  Enforces policies and rules pertaining to water safety.

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities

  • Assists the Swim Instructor to provide a safe, healthy & clean pool environment at all times
  • Assists by consistent and vigilant monitoring of the pool is required; anticipating potential hazardous situations and acting accordingly to prevent future occurrences
  • Responds quickly, efficiently, and professionally to any emergency situation; completes necessary paperwork and notifies the appropriate professional staff member
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of all aquatic facility rules and regulations
  • Demonstrates ability to enforce all aquatic facility rules and regulations
  • Assists in preparing aquatic instructional equipment before classes begin and put away when lessons have ended
  • Assists in providing corrective and positive feedback to students to foster a positive learning atmosphere
  • Follows oral and written directions accurately
  • Follows specific directions from supervisor to develop student's knowledge, skills, and capability for swimming
  • Assists in providing swim instruction to students of all ages, abilities and skill levels
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize a distressed swimmer and provides appropriate assistance when needed
  • May perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

          

Equipment:  This position may require the ability to use water safety and pool maintenance equipment in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine.  Must always comply with OPS’s guidelines for equipment use.

 

Travel:  Limited travel may be required.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:

  • Ability to work in the water and humid, wet environment for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Work in school building swimming pool environments
  • Ability to apply simple understanding to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instructions
  • Ability to read and use information from written materials and visual displays
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stoop and maintain balance while performing job related tasks
  • Ability to work in standing/walking positions on a frequent basis throughout the work shift

Interrelations:

  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor in order to complete day to day tasks
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to customer needs and maintain a positive attitude with all customers and colleagues
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external customers in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive customer service

 Employee Punctuality and Appearance

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee’s supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Current Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certification preferred
  • Water Safety Instructor certification preferred
  • Demonstrate ability to swim the length of the pool, as well as ability to tread water for 3 minutes
  • Demonstrate proficiency of swimming skills and various swim strokes to be able to demonstrate to students
  • Demonstrate proficiency of the English language to read and communicate with others
  • Must possess thorough knowledge and application of water safety skills
  • Ability and patience to work interactively with students
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication
  • Ability to understand the individual needs of each student
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance
  • Knowledge of OPS’s mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.
